Facilitator Notes

Introduction
The facilitator at any debate has a number of important roles to undertake, all of which help to make the debate a success.

These roles include:

  • Keeping the debate running to time
  • Making everyone feel at ease 
  • Ensuring everyone has the opportunity to have their say
  • Not allowing one individual to dominate the debate
  • Ensuring the debate stays close to the topic
  • Summarising an agreed statement for each topic 
  • Gaining group agreement for the agreed statements

This document aims to support anyone who will be facilitating a Chwarae Teg International Women’s Day debate a guide as to the requirements of the role and how to be an effective facilitator.

These notes are based on an example timeline for a debate from start to finish, and to help illustrate the facilitators role sample scripts have been provided. Please do not feel obliged to use these, they are have been included to give you an idea of the types of things you the facilitator need to say at certain points within your debate.
