STEM – barriers to women’s progression
Description
TBR and the Science Council are working with Chwarae Teg to undertake important research in the area of career paths for women. The research will explore: why many women and girls do not progress in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) careers in Wales, what the key issues are and recommendations on how to overcome any barriers identified.
The research will explore:
- The reasons why many women in Wales who are graduates in a STEM discipline do not progress into STEM careers;
- Occupational inequality and gender imbalance in the area of STEM;
- The extent to which alternative careers offer more attractive terms and conditions to STEM graduates;
- The mix and range of STEM employment in Wales in comparison with the rest of the UK;
- The impact of active interventions such as careers information and advice and guidance at different points in women’s lives;
- Any diversity issues which need to be addressed.

The research will be carried out by TBR on behalf of Chwarae Teg and will involve an online survey for STEM graduates and focus group interviews.
