Work Life Balance In Wales

Chwarae Teg has over 7 years experience in work life balance and flexible working, both at a practitioner and policy level, across all sectors and business in Wales. Working in partnership with the Welsh Assembly Government Chwarae Teg is  rolling out the Work Life Balance programme across Wales, championing flexible working.  Work is still very much in progress and the priority is to establish Wales as a modern economy based on flexible working and work life balance practices.

Work-life balance complements the Assembly's core values of promoting social inclusion, equality of opportunity and economic development for the people of Wales and assists in raising economic activity rates, helping Wales to meet employment and GDP targets.

A package of measures has been implemented by the Welsh Assembly Government since 2000 including:

  • advising and guiding Welsh employers and employees on work-life balance issues
  • raising awareness amongst the general public
  • supporting a 3 year pilot project providing support within targeted elements of the public sector in Wales, the evaluation of which was completed in September 2005.

"The Work-Life Balance Initiative complements the National Assembly's own core values of promoting social inclusion, equality of opportunity and economic development for the people of Wales - and this I welcome and applaud.

I believe that Work-Life Balance is a win/win situation. Flexible employment practices can help toward a more competitive and better economy and bring improved quality of life.

The Assembly is keen to work with partners in all sectors to drive the Work-Life Balance Initiative forward. I urge all employers to play their part in making Work-Life Balance a reality".
